I've just compared the link to the info I have and my info is the roll of the Delhi Durbar Medal 1911, which lists him (twice) as just Mr James Roots. The link now supplied clearly states VC, so I'm all ears to any more info on this.

Ok, so I've now managed to scan in 1. a photo of James Roots 2. a letter accompanying an article in Gunner magazine 3. article in Gunner magazine 4. article entitled "Behind a Ghaziabad Mystery" which shows a photo (albeit very poor quality) of Richard Fitzgerald. I'm sending them to Les in the hope he can share them. Hope this helps/is of interest.

My pleasure. I love a good mystery. So as to get an idea of the face (from both photos), I've enlarged them just short of losing too much quality. The younger of the 2 men appears to have a wide chin and large nose (that sticks out) but the older chap has a narrower chin and a large but flat nose. But then again, I've been staring at thme for a while!!

If you like a good mystery Les have a look in Monuments to Courage at Edward Jennings VCs photograph and you will find that the newspaper photograph of Richard Fitzgerald is identical ??

Well spotted. It would also explain the 2 extra bars on the Indian Mutiny Medal! Next question would be (other than the medals are out of order)... what are the other 2?
The answer is...........
Ghuznee & Sutlej
Full entitlement - Victoria Cross Ghuznee Medal Sutlej Medal w/ "Aliwal" clasp Indian Mutiny Medal w/ "Delhi", "Relief of Lucknow" & "Lucknow" clasps

Thanks to Roots and Les for the images and well done Robert for realising the portrait was Jennings. The article “Behind the Ghaziabad Mystery” is an excellent explanation of what happened. I would add that the pension was 10 pounds not 5 pounds and was not a small pension. In the second half of the 19th Century 10 pounds a year was a pension that you could live on.
