HM Submarine E14 which was badly damaged from shellfire in January 1918 that forced its captain to ground her in order for the crew to escape has been found intact in the Dardanelles by Turkish documentary-makers. Lieutenant Command Geoffrey Saxton White was in command of the E14 which penetrated the Dardanelles, more than two years after the end of the Gallipoli campaign, seeking the German battlecruiser Goben which had run aground in the Dardanelles. During the evacuation of the submarine White was killed by shellfire and only seven sailors were picked by the Turks. The then commander of the E14 in 1915, Lt-Cdr Edward Courtney Boyle had also been decorated with the Victoria Cross making the E14 the only ship in which two captains were awarded the Victoria Cross.
