The George Cross posthumously awarded to Kirpa Ram, 13th Frontier Rifles, which was stolen from his widow’s home in Himachal Pradesh in 2002 surfaced at an auction in London in 2009. The auction was halted and Scotland Yard was called in. The seller, Ashok Nath, said he bought it in New Delhi for £4,000 and there has been a protracted legal battle over the medal’s ownership. The widow’s barrister, Ian Mayes QC, who gave his services for free, secured an agreement that would return the medal to the widow for £12,000 towards Mr Nath’s legal costs. The widow has until 31 December to raise the funds.
