I am researching Guardsman Ernest Edward Vincent (d. 27/09/1918) who is buried in Sanders Keep Military Cemetery. Ernest was born in Broadway but moved to Bristol after leaving school where he married Ethel Banwell and had 3 children before enlisting with the Grenadier Guards. Ernest is commemorated on the war memorial in Broadway and I am trying to find out whether he is commemorated on a memorial in Bristol. I understand that there is no central war memorial with names inscribed on it in Bristol but am wondering whether anyone has any record of Ernest being commemorated on any of the other war memorials in and around the city. Thanks Broadway Remembers www.warmem.broadwaymanor.co.uk

You are quite right in that there is no central/main memorial with names (although we do have the Cenotaph on the Centre). If you know where he lived in Bristol (1901 or 1911 cenuses depending on when he came here) then a local church or 2 may have his name. I've researched many of the churches in & village memorials in the south Bristol area, but don't recognise his name as "one of mine".
CWGC show him as "husband of" in Stapleton Road - that's quite a central road to town but most people there nowadays speak Somali! I'll have a drive around and see what local churches remain and take it from there.
