Plaque honours hero of Somme
Sergeant Major Carter was honoured by ex members of the Sussex Regiment
A plaque to mark the home of a Sussex soldier who died during the Battle of the Somme has been unveiled.
Sergeant Major Nelson Carter was awarded the Victoria Cross after he was killed at the bloody opening day of the Somme during the First World War.
Sgt Carter was the only Sussex soldier awarded the Victoria Cross in the conflict. Yesterday a blue heritage plaque was unveiled at Sgt Carter's home in Greys Road, Eastbourne.
The ceremony was carried out by Captain Hugh Wyatt, the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex.
More than 19,000 British soldiers lost their lives on that day, among 55,000 British casualtie
