Just finished reading Smith Dorien's account of the disaster at Isandhlwana. He was one of a few officers to escape with his life. He states that he was able to ride right through the mass of Zulus and they completley ignored him. He further states that he heard afterwards that the the Zulu King told his people that any of the enemy who were wearing black coats were civilians and not worth killing. Smith Dorien was wearing his blue patrol jacket as were the only other five officers to survive the battle. The suggestion seems to be that had he been wearing a red uniform jacket, he may well have not managed to escape the battle.

I have seen a file at Kew concerning the 1879 Naval Brigade which included scetches made by a Smith Dorien. Thanks for this post, it make more sence now!
