Have just come accross a piece of information which claims that the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment is the Regiment the most Victoria Crosses at fifty seven. I always believed that my old Regiment the Royal Artillery were the highest awardees with fifty one. A bit of further reasearch and I find Max Arthurs Symbol of Courage also claims The Princess of Wales Royal Regiment as the top awardees but with fifty six. I found the original information at www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/FactSheets/TheVictoriaCross.htm(watch capital letters on this web address) I have not yet looked up anything but I imagine this has probably been attained by the amalgamation of other Regiments. Can anybody confirm this. Regards Robert Henry

From the list I have (which is a year or so old), the honours are as follows......... Royal Navy - 83 Australian Imperial Force - 58 Corps of Royal Engineers - 35 The Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own) - 26 Once you take into consideration all the mergers recently (and those due to take place), the list will read..... Army Navy RAF etc etc etc so no single regiment will be top dog.

Phred - funnily enough I spoke to Iain (who runs victoriacross.org.uk and his reply was;
"When asked this question, which is quite often, I always give the reply that the Royal Regiment of Artillery have been awarded 47 Victoria Crosses, followed by the Corps of Royal Engineers with 34. These figures are always open to discussion but the RA has won the most VCs".
I think what the total actually means is 63 to the Artillery corps, including the RA, RGA, RHA etc.

My calculations for British service and Commonwealth totals. Notes below indicate how I made my calculations.
Royal Navy 105 Royal Marines 10 British Army 824 Royal Air Force 40 Great Britain Total 979
Australia 91 Canada 78 New Zealand 22 South Africa 29 Newfoundland 1 Fiji 1 King's African Rifles Honourable East Indies 63 Indian Army 85 Civilian 5 American Unknown 1
Total 1356
Notes The table includes the most recent award to Corporal Bryan Budd in December 2006. It is based on tables from the War Office Alphabetical list of Victoria Cross recipients (Jan 1953) and The Story of the Victoria Cross by Sir John Smyth Bt VC MC (1963). Differences between the tables are noted below: Royal Navy Mayo (Indian Naval Brigade) allotted to HEIC, Warneford and Davies (RNAS) allotted to RAF. Gray (RCN attached FAA) included in the Canadian total and Esmonde (FAA) is included in the RN total. British Army includes bars to Martin-Leake and Chavasse. Royal Air Force All 12 RFC and both RNAS awards are included in RAF total. Canada Smyth's 1914-1919 total has counted a New Zealand award as Canadian New Zealand Includes bar to Upham. Not included is the “Victoria Cross for New Zealand” announced on 2 July 2007 to Corporal Willy Apiata South Africa The War Office and Smyth counted Lt W J English of the 2nd Scottish Horse, Boer War, as British Army. The Scottish Horse was a South African unit. Civilian It is now generally accepted that George Bell Chicken a volunteer with the Indian Naval Brigade in the Indian Mutiny should be listed as a civilian.
