On Friday, 1 August 2008, South Australian Premier Mike Rann opened the Tom 'Diver' Derrick Bridge crossing the Port River in Adelaide's north-west. Completion of twin road and rail bridges took three years to complete at a cost of $A178 million. The road bridge is named after Tom Derrick a World War 2 Victoria Cross recipient. Mr Derrick's sister, Rose Stirling, was there to hear the Premier speak about her brother. "Another great South Australian defined by the word courage - one of the greatest war heroes that South Australia, and Australia, has ever seen," Mr Rann said. It was only in June, following a community campaign, that the South Australian Government decided to name the bridge after Derrick.
