Have just been reading that a Ex U.S. marine Richard T Spooner owns a bar in Quantico, Virginia, and that it is the only place in the world where a Victoria Cross and a Medal of Honor are displayed together. Reference is made to a Captain Bill Radcliffe being the Medal of Honor winner, (althouigh I can't find his citation). But does anybody know anything about this story or whos Victoria Cross is displayed beside the Medal of Honor?

I think it's one of the defaults our American host's use to curb naughty words (try a few other ) I'll try and override the setting for it.

Done it. The word "poon" can (in American English) refer to sex in Viet Nam.
For anyone else reading this thread, the word came out a Sthingyer.

I'm not aware of a VC being held "privately" in a bar in the U.S. Also, I can't find any mention of anyone called Radcliffe receiving the either the CMoH or MoH. What was your source for this info?

Just as well someone can sort out a computer. Les I first saw it on the wikipedia page on the Victoria Cross en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_CrossIf you scroll to near the bottom of the page to "Private Collections" you will see the claim below Lord Ashcroft entry. The rest of the information I got just by Googleing "The Globe and Laurel" and "Richard T Spooner. It is possible that a privately held VC could be anywhere in the world, but like yourself I would have thought if it was a genuine Victoria Cross on display in a bar it would be listed as such. If the VC is a a copy it would be a rather ridiculous claim to make.

I've found a webpage about the Quantico area (and what to visit etc) and the Globe & Laurrel is listed. Although it states he has the MoH and Silver Star to Bill Radcliffe, there is no mention of a VC. www.fabuloustravel.com/usa/quantico/quantico.html

The article mentions that Radcliffe got his MoH during WW1...... but I couldn't see an entry for him on the main MoH site

I saw this the other day and followed the link to the restaurant, but it's unknown to Wikipedia..... then I did the search. I'm tempted to contact the local press (in Quantico) to see if they have any e-mail contact details for Spooner. Failing that, drop the restaurant a letter.

Over the years, the restaurant's walls and ceilings have been covered with relics and memorabilia documenting Marines serving around the world and law enforcement agencies. Shadow boxes built into the walls showcase items such as a canteen carried at Saipan and decorations from the 1890s. There are even examples of the six designs of the Medal of Honor -- though not one that was awarded to an individual."If anyone were to give me one that had been awarded to a Marine, I would feel obligated to return it to the Marines," Spooner said. No VC on: www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/24/AR2007012400029.html
