‘On this day’ for 12 October listed three awards, two for 1917 and one for 1918. The two awards for 1917 were for the First Battle of Passchendaele. I had not realised until I saw ‘On this day’ that these were the only two awards for the First Battle of Passchendaele on 12 October 1917. One was the posthumous award to Australian Captain Clarence Smith Jeffries. He was a company commander in the 34th Battalion, 9th Brigade, 3rd Australian Division of the British 2nd Army. The other award was to Private Albert Halton of the 1st Bn Kings Own (Royal Lancaster Regt), 12th Brigade, 4th Division, 5th Army. The 12th Brigade commander from January to November 1917 was Brigadier General A Carton de Wiart who had been awarded the Victoria Cross as a battalion commander in June 1916.
